Civilization and its discontents
In theory we are free. In theory, no external authority can dictate the conditions of human co-existence. In theory you have no other limitations than yourself. In theory you are free to live your life however you want.
But what are you going to do with your freedom when you don’t know how to use it?
“Civilization and its Discontents” is for those who believe in their existential freedom but are afraid of where it is going to take them.
”Civilization and its Discontents” is a kickoff-seminar on organizing freedom. During the evening visitors and performers work together to create guidelines on how everybody’s individual freedom can be co-organized in a temporary utopia. A place where dark desires and selfish instincts can co-exist with that which Freud defined as the cornerstones of civilization: Beauty, Order and Hygiene.
- About Poste Restante
Swedish company Poste Restante creates performances where audiences are placed inside a dilemma in an ongoing situation. Opposed to finding solutions to inner problems and conflicts, the pieces aim to create a space where audience can dwell in difficult questions, and where these issues are legitimatized. Poste Restantes’ interest rests within the actual and the parameters of the situation at hand, there are no fictive “back stories”, no on and off stage. Audience often participate tangibly in the pieces, and works are created with the honest yet unexpected purpose to encourage and equip audiences to work with conflicting emotions and ideals.
Poste Restante was founded in 2007 by artistic directors Linn Hilda Lamberg and Stefan Åkesson, in an active challenge of the conventions that establish theatre as a mass-medium and the audience as a mass. Poste Restante has been presented in Sweden and internationally. Current projects include a two-part a staging of Civilization and Its Discontents (by Sigmund Freud) and touring of previous works, The Economy of Pleasure (2012) in Sweden, and Closing Time (2012) in Chile.
