In this project Kajsa Sandström wants to take a look at relational, social and cultural processes for the becoming of bodies and reflect this in the becoming that takes place between spectators and performers in the live-act. She wants to examine how physical images; photographs, mirror images, media images, and intangible images; collective seeing processes, projection and memory, relate to bodies becoming. It's at the same time about the limits and the opportunities in the interaction between people and the fear that can occur in these processes. Kajsa Sandström wants to examine this by showing how relational, social and cultural processes of the body's becoming are produced and reflected that with the becoming that takes place before the public gaze on a theatre stage.
As in earlier solo performances she has made, exploring different visual processes, this project investigates the visual processes that are activated in and constitute the living art form of dance and choreography. This time it is also about how immaterial visuality plays into the experience of movement, the unfolding of past and future into the present, and how time and visual processes together create the potential for becoming. The questions relates to her artistic research in the performances "In the Mirror, a solo choreography in the footsteps of Maya Deren" 2009, "I need a witness to perform" in 2008. The choreography will be a solo piece based on the study she will do during the creative process.
Kajsa Sandström has been working professionally with dance and choreography since 2004. She worked as dancer with actor Frank Vercruyssen/Tg STAN (BE) 2005, choreographer Mette Ingvartsen (DK) 2003-2007, Cie Kubilai Khan Investigations (FR) 2008-2010.
Since 2006 Kajsa has developed projects initiated from artistic questions and interests, often in collaboration with other artists from dance as well as related fields. By displacing her own knowledge in meeting, collision and dialogue, she discovers potential to work choreographically in new ways. In each project certain specific practices and methods are forming the process. Material is derived from testing and experimenting and the forming of ideas. Kajsa is interested in how choreography can articulate- including but not exclusively- the experience of movement, body and perception within different frames. In front of an audience the quest is to find out how material as well as it's constellations may produce sense, but also evoke questions and thoughts in the viewer.
Recent touring: “I need a witness to perform” 2009, in collaboration with David Bergé, “Con/text” 2010, with Ylva Henrikson and Maline Casta, “In the Mirror- A solo choreography in the footsteps of Maya Deren” 2010. In collaboration with Frédéric Alstadt, the new piece “Between dog and wolf” premiered at Dansens Hus Stockholm in March 2012. Kajsa was a student at PARTS, Brussels 2000-2004.With the support of the DEPARTS network. DEPARTS is funded by the European Commission (Culture program)
