Expanded choreography - Shifting the agency of movement in The Artificial Nature Series and 69 positions
On Saturday 22nd of October at 10:30, Mette Ingvartsen will defend her artistic PhD in Choreography at MDT. The dissertation has been carried out and supervised within the graduate program in Choreography at Stockholm University of the Arts. It is presented at Lund University in the framework of the cooperation agreement between the Malmö Faculty of Fine and Performing Arts, Lund University, and Stockholm University of the Arts regarding doctoral education in the subject Choreography in the context of Konstnärliga forskarskolan.
For the public defense the opponent will be Adrian Heathfield and the examination committee consists of Jonathan Burrows, Annie Dorsen, Leena Rouhiainen, and Anders Paulin (in the role of substitute).
The discussion will evolve around two books and a series of video registrations of live performances made between 2010 and 2016.
The Artificial Nature Series focusses on how relations between human and non-human agency can be explored and reconfigured through choreography. By investigating and creating a ‘nonhuman theater’ questions regarding material agency, ecology, natural disasters, the Anthropocene and non-subjective performativity are posed. The resulting reflections are closely related to the poetic principles utilized to create the performances, while also drawing connections to territories outside theater.
By contrast, 69 positions inscribes itself into a history of human performance with a focus on nudity, sexuality and how the body historically has been a site for political struggles. By creating a guided tour through sexual performances – from the naked protest actions of the 1960’s, through an archive of personal performances into a reflection on contemporary sexual practice – this solo work rethinks audience participation and proposes a notion of soft and social choreography.
The contrasting performative strategies articulate a twofold notion of expanded choreography: on the one hand movement is extended beyond the human body by including the agency of nonhuman performers, and on the other hand, movement is expanded into an imaginary and virtual space thanks to ‘language choreography’.

- Om Mette Ingvartsen
Mette Ingvartsen is a Danish choreographer and dancer. From 1999 she studied in Amsterdam and Brussels where she in 2004 graduated from the performing arts school P.A.R.T.S. Her first performance “Manual Focus”(2003) was made while she was still studying. Since then she has initiated several research projects and made numerous performances, among others “50/50” (2004), “to come” (2005), “Why We Love Action” (2006), “It’s in The Air” (2008) “GIANT CITY” (2009) and “All the way out there…”(2011).
Questions of kinesthesia, perception, affect and sensation have been crucial to most of her work. Recently her interest has turned towards thinking choreography as an extended practice. Starting with “evaporated landscapes” in 2009, a performance for foam, fog, light and sound, this interest has led to a series of propositions that extend choreography into non-human materials. In 2010 she worked on several site-specific propositions, also dealing with notions of artificial nature. “The Extra Sensorial Garden” was presented in Copenhagen and “The Light Forest” was open to be visited during Szene Salzburg in July 2010 and 2011. Her group work “The Artificial Nature Project” (2012) reintroduced the human performer into a network of connections between human and non-human actors. This work concluded the series on artificial nature.
In 2014 she started a new cycle of work entitled “The Red Pieces”. “69 positions” opened this series and questioned the borders between private and public space, by literally placing the naked body in the middle of the theater public. Mette Ingvartsen is finishing a PhD in choreography at UNIARTS in Sweden. She is in this context researching the relationship between artist writing and artistic practice, using her own work and writing as a way to experiment with these relations.
