This That Unravels is a meditation on five dancers, after an idea by Björn Säfsten. Here something appears and disappears, is repositioned and shifted. All in an intertwining, a journey where things become visible and take shape, find expression in different situations, and then fade away like a long chain where the end is hidden in the fog. This That Unravels creates moments of cacophony and exponential increase, sprung from a common pulse that is shifted between five people.
“Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by patterns. Of how varying small components can be joined together in a variety of different ways to create different formations. Of how the components, which make up a pattern, are put in relation to each other and determine the type of chain of logic that will be able to be repeated. Of how such a provision, logic can be repeated indefinitely.
There is no clear start or beginning to a pattern and perhaps it was this feeling of constant continuation that fascinated me? I felt as though, in a pattern, I could get a feeling of eternity. At the same time, I found it enjoyable to trace the logic, understand it and break down the mathematics. When patterns are embodied, they approach being or acting as behaviors. There are a number of risks and also potential for how bodies can be created within collective systems. At the time of writing, there is a hope to be able to both arouse and fool these concepts and twist them towards a kind of hopeful criticism.”
– Björn SäfstenBjörn has invited five dancers to the process that are all completely new acquaintances – Pär Andersson, Yared Tilahun Cederlund, Daniella Eriksson, BamBam Frost, and Maia Means. The performance is developed in close collaboration with the dancers in the studio during the autumn of 2021 and the spring of 2022.
The work will premiere a week before Björn Säfsten’s “Lost night” from 2020 at MDT. Costumes created by the celebrated Danish duo KasperSophie. Original music composed by KABLAM. For this work, Björn Säfsten has continued to work with lighting designer Susanna Hedin.
- About Björn Säfsten
Björn Säfsten is a choreographer based in Stockholm. His works are characterized by an inquisitive examination of symbols in the everyday where movements are transformed to new representations and receive new meanings. Several means of expression are mixed on stage, such as gestures, voice, and recently, text and song. Long processes lead to works full of presence, failure, recognition, and seriousness. All embedded in a detailed, carved movement material. In 2021 he has premiered the solo “I själva verket”, a co-production with Riksteatern which will tour Sweden in the fall of 2022. Next, Björn Säfsten will create a new work with the dance ensemble at Regionteater Väst.
