- The Swedish Dance History Vol. 4
Now in its fourth year there are 9000 copies of The Swedish Dance History in existence. There are another 16 volumes to be made. Maybe it’s time we should talk about this book called The Swedish Dance History. How has it changed the dance across the world? What effect has it had on Swedish dance? What potential does the book have to evolve? Do you have a favourite text? Do you have a vision for the future of The Swedish Dance History?
The Swedish Dance History is a project that supports artists, creates opportunities to articulate, produces discourse, enables exchange on a global level and many many other wonderful things. Every year the shape of the project changes; some years it is closely allied to a festival, other years the project is over in a month, some years it takes three months and then there are those years where it is just done wherever and whenever by a group of dance do’ers and makers who are determined to see the book made for twenty years in a row. What is not up for discussion about The Swedish Dance History is that it is silver and at least 1000 pages long. In terms of graphic design and lay out, nothing will change; the book will look as it does today in 2028 when the final version is sent from the printers. The list of authors will change, the texts will change but it will look the same. The Swedish Dance History is both a chameleon and fixed entity. It is full of potential for everyone yet sometimes it feels not quite kosher. Let’s celebrate, ponder, admire and question the wonder that is The Swedish Dance History.
Come to discuss and read The Swedish Dance History Vol. 4 together in MDT foyer. Come take part in a discussion about dance, read about dance, watch a choreography in the making and then watch a fabulous performance in a theatre. The TSDH Vol. Reading Sunday Session will take place before a showing of a work in progress by Marcus Baldemar and Carlos Maria Romero and before a performance of Eleanor Bauer’s “ELEANOR!” and “(BIG GIRLS DO BIG THINGS)” in the theatre.
