- PRE PRODUCTION: MOVEMENT
“By dancing the common ground, bodies will move politically, yet without politics. What is generated is a movement elaborating itself without consensus so as to practice dissensus as an alternative to what’s left.”
This proposal takes place in the context of Paz’s PhD project ‘dissident choreographies’ at Stockholm University of the Arts. The project proposes the separation between ‘choreography’ and ‘movement’, approaching notions such displacement and interruption on one hand, and affirmation and identification of subaltern, minor and dissident figures, which opens the possibility for choreography to exist as an embodied critique of use-value and as a field of ethical and aesthetical concern. The project asserts that choreography – as a dispositive for the construction of movement(s) which work, towards or against, a global gaze – has lost effectiveness, arguing that today no longer the question of freedom or emancipation of the individual self – via choreographies of his/her own – are effective, but the question of the power of movement itself, hence the question of how to liberate movement from the individual free subject of contemporary bio-politics.
PRE PRODUCTION is part of a series of collective-movement-actions that Paz Rojo has initiated since 2011 in various institutions, venues and self-organised contexts. Each action follow a protocol for its realisation: they are produced in within a laboratory-situation; made within a time-frame between 7 to 10 sessions of 4-5 hours each; they are open to anyone interested and no prior experience on dance is needed. What’s presented is not a piece or the resulted version of the work experienced in the laboratories, they are neither a work in process nor in progress but nothing else than a ‘practice’. Like a dance disrupted by its own preparation, they don’t propose a simulated or recreated progression of time which pushes elements under a deliberated pace. There is no particular time of performance because the ‘performance of time’ is already happening presumily followed by a conversation with participants.
- About Paz Rojo
Paz Rojo is a cultural worker whose activity develops in the field of live arts, movement and choreography. Preceding her phd project at Stockholm University of the Arts, she initiates “C O R E O G R A F X S” (2010-2013) a critical and experimental framework mainly developed in between Madrid, Barcelona, Sao Paulo and Vienna and which now follows in the context of her phd in Stockholm. This frame-work includes the itinerant laboratory “choreography: a problem to practice” and the solos, colective-movement-actions, video-essays and lectures “whatever moving like this” (2011); Inaugural Action (2011); “EX POSICION UNIVERSAL (democracy is a psycho-kinetic training)” (2012); “YES WE CANNOT, a pre-formance in the era of con-fusion” (2012); ‘The Gerries by Gerry’ (2012); “I don´t like community in the same way I don´t like contact-improvisation” (2013) DANCISM (2014). And the curatorial frames and contexts “[OUTBACK # 1] choreographing dissidence” (2014); “what can a body do?” (2014), what if we let go being (artists)?(2013).
