- Epic
”Epic” is the new production by Mårten Spångberg featuring nine dancers and a large scale mise en scène, consisting of eight autonomous solos wrapped around an organic structure where the haute-weird shake it with squid like movements in an endless orgasm and darkness shines kaleidoscopic in psychedelic orchestration. It is an archaeology in search of its ur-trauma, the moment of necessity, of being true to the universe and of making a dance. ”Epic” is the gothic part of comedy scratching the crust of the earth lifting its head to the sky like only a singer song-writer can do, the darkest horror of cosmic death-drive and the paralyzing fear of circular double speech. It’s a cheese maker on a fading horizon or it’s epic, all of it and everything else too.
Mårten Spångberg has been active as choreographer for fifteen years, always searching for a new perspective and alternative modes of activating choreography to produce previously impossible dances. Over the years he has developed techniques and strategies, borrowed and remixed others’ often in connection with theoretical concepts. As a choreographer, or artist, Spångberg is perhaps more of a philosopher than a craftsman, an inventor that leaves creations behind than a peasant that cultivates his land. But it is certainly no accident that he has chosen those strategies in front of others. The over the top and everything else too of Mårten Spångberg implies a refusal to household and be precious, change in front of ownership or a kind of generosity that can’t be mistaken for kindness. ”Epic” is an attempt to be absolutely personal yet without taking anything personal, of allowing all phantasies and mysteries to merge with concepts, metaphysics and the universe. ”Epic” is being unconditional by letting everything play its part, but it’s also an expose, an eutrophic retrospective and most of all it’s a choreography and not a performance.
For ”Epic” Mårten Spångberg has in collaboration with eight performers created equally many autonomous full-length choreographic solos. The solos each unfold a strategy, model or structural capacity previously experimented with by Spångberg. In ”Epic” the solos are twined into an unruly organism who salutes it’s audience by blinding them, hypnotizing them and making them beg for more.
