“Eyjafjallajökull, the Icelandic volcano, erupted in March 2010, scattering dangerous ash and causing cancelations and delays throughout European airspace – the largest disruption of air travel since World War II. Many people were momentarily stranded, unexpectedly halted.
The eruption and the shutdown of air traffic, helped choreographer Liz Kinoshita reflect upon our globetrotting lifestyles today. In VOLCANO she uses mechanisms of the “musical” genre from ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, to share reflections on the hectic lives of contemporary performers and travelers.
Today, with some air travel costing less than ground travel options, we find ourselves going up in the air and before our bodies know it, we have come down in a new city, country, or culture. Generally we find new ways to anchor ourselves, more quickly. Permanence can seem a daunting prospect, if only because it is unusual. We seek solutions for security, or lack thereof, increasingly in freelance situations. As ”show people” in “show business”, we learn to be more flexible, to accomplish more, even if a work is minimal, or deconstructed, or ”a flop”.
Together with three excellent performers, Liz Kinoshita created a smart and fresh performance, in a mix of self-composed songs, dance and stage presence. Pushed by the steady rhythm of the tap dance and the emotion of the songs, VOLCANO shares the lifestyles led, the tour routes taken, the feats required to make everything possible, and the reflections that arise when a volcanic eruption is bringing our feet back on the ground.”
- About Liz Kinoshita
Liz Kinoshita was born in Toronto, Canada and moved to Europe in 2002 to further study and work. In 2004, Liz participated in DanceWEB during the ImpulsTanz Festival in Vienna, Austria, having received a Grant to Dance Professionals from the Canada Council of the Arts. She studied in P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels, Belgium from 2004-2008. Since graduating she has worked with various Belgian companies, such as: ZOO/Thomas Hauert in Accords, You’ve Changed, and MONO, with tg STAN in Nusch and The Tangible, and with choreographer Eleanor Bauer/GoodMove in A Dance For The Newest Age (the triangle piece) and Tentative Assembly (the tent piece).
