Michael Bekele "Black square"

Michael Bekeles latest short-film “Black Square” has been an exploration of different somatic practices such as somatic abolitionism as described in Resmaa Menakem’s seminal work “My Grandmother’s Hands”. His residency at MDT will be a continuation of his explorations of the films methods and themes.

The idea of creating dramatic narratives through both the body and the unconscious has been an extremely captivating one to Michael. During his residency he will continue to explore different methods of creating texts, both in connection with one’s own but also other bodies and (sub-)consciousness.

The residency will hopefully open up a space of exploration of different methods. Methods that are aimed to extend his practice beyond what technology has to offer and maybe even give new ideas on how a script-writer can connect to their material and share it in a useful (or maybe non-useful way) already during its creation. The wish is to extend away from the creative silo of the mind, the bed, the desk and into a creative space of connection through the body, experience and the unconscious.

I hope that we get to cross paths during my time of exploration at MDT. At this point in time I know very little about what I am looking for or what exactly I am trying to understand, but I am filled with questions, which is why meeting you will make all the difference.

The short-film “Black Square” will have its premiere in the beginning of next year. To keep updated you can follow @flwrstudio on Instagram.
