Introduction to Lustholmen 2023

Lustholmen 2023 collage

Lustholmen 7th – 11th of June at MDT and Skeppsholmen.

Lustholmen is a festival with dance, choreography, music and art celebrating the start of summer with lust, life and light!

Lustholmen was the name for Skeppsholmen at the end of the 16th century when the island was used recreationally by the first Vasa-Kings, and since 2021 it is also the name of a festival run by MDT Moderna Dansteatern.

Lustholmen 2023 offers a dazzling five-day programme, with international and local acts within dance, choreography, music and performance presented around the island in collaboration with neighbouring organisations Statens konstråd/Public Art Agency, Moderna Museet and ArkDes.

We rediscover Skeppsholmen together, by allowing performances to take place outdoors as well as indoors at the most expected and unexpected locations. The legendary performance artist Katalin Ladik opens the festival with her performance Follow Me Into Mythology. Choreographer Stina Nyberg guides us around Skeppsholmen through the site-specific walk The Gossip, designed from a dog’s perspective. Sonia Hughes spends a whole day building a shelter on the island in I AM FROM REYKJAVIK, a work which can be seen as part-protest, part-sculpture, part-ceremony. Cristina Caprioli and four dancers create choreographic images at different outdoor sites with the help of a multitude of silver coats in SILVER OUTDOOR. Lustholmen also contains the programme Bergspråk (displaced), curated by the duo DACE – Dance Art Critical Ecology, where testimonies from within the mountain concerning events beyond the geography of Stockholm are given voice and body through eco-sensitive works such as somatic rituals.

Lust will flow through the festival programme in various ways, such as in the bombastic, playful and erotic choreography NX FUIMO by Tamara Alegre with Élie Autin, Marga Alfeirão, Cuba and Malik Nashad Sharpe, and on the dance floor when we inaugurate Klubb Lustholmen. Choreographer and dancer Shirley Harthey Ubilla explores pleasure in Yet Familia(r) with references to Drake, lesbianism and humour in a Latinx futuristic landscape. We will also get to experience two world premieres by Sweden-based choreographers – BamBam Frost with dream beam and Alma Söderberg with New Old. And finally, to wrap up the festival, we offer yet another lavish dance party! The Gathering is a dance floor with the audience as co-creators, arranged by Niki Tsappos, Maele Cheza Sabuni, Yared Tilahun Cederlund and Mia Annerwall.

Warmly welcome!
